The Inspiration Behind N°5

In 1921, Gabrielle Chanel commissioned perfumer Ernest Beaux to create a unique fragrance that would embody femininity—something rare and powerful. Beaux crafted a ground-breaking formula that innovatively used aldehydes. Chanel chose the fifth sample and decided to name it simply “N°5.” She paired this fragrance with a revolutionary bottle design, featuring a clean white label and faceted cabochon. In 1986, CHANEL’s in-house perfumer Jacques Polge reimagined the scent, adding depth to the original creation and developing this fuller eau de parfum version.
